Being from England, I have always had that perfect minds image of watching a smooth, jazz masterclass like this, in a small, smokey, basement club in America, with little round tables, and eternally glamorous, beautiful waitresses.
Strangely, I set myself in that image and it is in black and white.

This is going to be outlandish to a lot of people but I just discovered Wes Montgomery’s music via a video guitar lesson. It’s great. I’m amazed at his use of octaves. It seems really effortless. I really want that sound. I’m going to be listening to Wes a lot from now on.

I think the only survivors of all this great musicians, are Dutch drummer Han Bennik, still active and playing great (there is a YT video of him from 2019), and the Irish bassist Rick Laird. Mr. Harold Mabern sadly left us this 2020 and bassists Arthur Harper and Ruud Jacobs left us last year 2019. RIP all of them. They will live forever through their music.

Stevie Ray Vaughan definitely heard Wes' playing from 1:14:58 through 1:15:08. he lifted it noted per note for Stang's Swang. Most of the song was lifted.
around 38:50 – i don't know how i missed that when i listened to this video before . thats some brazil bossa nova music that tune is . can't remember what song it is or if its an improvisation or a variation on a particular song . jobim, gilberto ?
It is very sad when you realize Wes would die of a heart attack only 3 years after this tv concert or rehearsal in 1965 . He was only 45 when he passed away in 1968 . but like i said before, his spirit lives on … at least for me it does . and if you don't believe in that sort of thing , his music lives on in videos like this one .
I read once that before Wes became famous he was risking his hands doing hard factory work on a machine during the day to make a living for him and his wife … At night he'd play his guitar many hours . landlord and neighbors complained it was too loud so he started playing with his thumb to lower the volume. i think he was still playing an acoustic without amp at the time . the rest is history as they say

this video is one of the best jazz gigs ever recorded .he passed away not long after and it was a real loss to the music world. this kind of drumming is the best -its total jazz and best to bass along to
